ABOUT
Britain West Motorsport
Britain West Motorsports, Canada’s leading Formula Ford competition group, continues a nearly three decades long program of excellence. Stared in 1975 by Oliver Clubine, BWM was originally started to service and repair SU Carburetors for MG sports cars. That effort quickly grew into an engine building program as demand for maintenance and performance upgrades grew among British sports car enthusiasts. Joining the company in the early ninety’s was son David Clubine who had been building a solid racing resume in Formula Ford. In 1994 Britain West Motorsports began to service, support and rent Formula Ford cars as well as taking on the importing of Dunlop race tires, with sister company Vintage Tyres Limited. By 1999 the company had grown and they became the Van Diemen importer for Canada. Over the years the company has expanded on its’ original location now taking in over 5,000 sq ft along with an off site tire warehouse.
Along competing in several Formula Ford series in Canada and the US, the focus for Britain West has never left the British car collector. The team can be seen working on a number of exclusive road as well as track cars for customers. The complete rebuild and rework of these unique and vintage cars helps keep Britain West grounded in the their past while they continue to expand in the future.
TEAM
David Clubine – President and Team Principal
Winning on the track is nothing new for David. He literally grew up at the race track and climbed into a race car as soon as he was allowed. Following in his fathers footsteps, David quickly made his mark in Formula Ford winning races and championships along the way. Now as Team Principal for Britain West, David is passing that experience onto a new generation of racers.
Phil Matthews – Chief Race Engineer
Phil is actually a real engineer. When not working for Bombardier Aerospace in their advanced avionics division, Phil works with Britain West as the lead team engineer. With experience in Europe and working for drivers like Rubens Barrichello, Phil develops the final set-up and works with drivers to get the most out of their car.
Dave Owen – Engine Builder
Part of the Britain West family since 2004, Dave is best known as Engine Dave, which happens when you have too many guys named Dave. Dave heads up the engine department and keeps the in-house dyno humming. From complete rebuilds of many different race engines to basic updates of vintage engines, Dave is responsible for all the noise we love so much.
Don Sobering – Chief Mechanic
Don has been involved in the racing community since 1971. He has raced in Formula Ford’s in England and all over Europe, as well as the American Formula Ford Pro Series. During his racing career Don also won the Quebec Championship. He brings international experience to our staff as he worked for Riley Technologies which took him to Lemans and all over North America. His passion is original (real) Minis and is an expert in Mini mechanics and complete restoration.
Ken Robins – Race Mechanic
A veteran campaigner of the Formula Ford wars, “Kenny” has been there and done that all over the world of formula car racing. Hailing originally from the UK, Ken has made Canada his new home and been part of the Britain West crew for over ten years.
Stephen Adams – Race Mechanic
The two time Canadian Formula Ford Champion, works weekends as a fly in race mechanic, bringing years of valuable experience. He also doubles as a handy driver coach when needed.
